About the Project

Too many decisions about our lives get made without us. Throughout history, Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ folks have been misrepresented, uncounted or erased in institutional data. Especially in times of misinformation, data grounded in lived experiences provides a counterweight to harmful and inaccurate representations of Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ lives. Pride in Numbers is about power, truth, and collective action—and making sure we’re the ones holding the mic.

Through an online survey, storytelling sessions and a community art project, Pride in Numbers is creating a powerful portrait of Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ life in Oregon. The information and stories we gather will be shared back with the community, so our advocates, community organizations, and organizers – each of us – can build the programs, services, mutual aid networks, and policies we deserve and dream of.

FAQs

  • Pride in Numbers is a statewide Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ research project in Oregon. It’s a community-led, independent effort to gather real stories from real lives—so we can build better services, smarter policies, and a future where all of us can thrive.

  • This is an independent community project run entirely by Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ Oregonians—majority Black, Indigenous, People of Color, majority trans and nonbinary, and majority from rural and non-urban communities. It’s fiscally sponsored by Pride Foundation and supported by partners across the state.

  • We’ll explore things like health care, housing, safety, education, economic well-being, family, identity, community, belonging, and more. The goal is to paint an honest picture of what life is really like for Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ people in Oregon—especially for folks who face added barriers because of their race, gender, income, disability, location, or other parts of who they are.

  • The project is funded by a mix of foundation grants and state dollars. All of our funders believe in the power of community-led research—and none of them have any control over our work or access to the information we gather.

    • November 2025: Storytelling sessions and interviews begin

    • January 2026: Survey and Community Art Project go live

    • Winter 2026: Findings released

  • If you complete the survey and/or participate in another research activity, you’ll be told exactly what information is being collected and how it will be used. You will always be given the information you need to decide for yourself how you want to engage with the project and whether you’re comfortable sharing your information. We treat your information the way we want ours to be treated - with respect and care for your privacy and wellbeing.

Information gathered through Pride in Numbers research activities will be compiled and analyzed to create a powerful portrait of Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ life in Oregon. The reports and insights from this project will be shared back to the community.

  • We know that sharing personal information can be risky—especially right now, when Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ people are being targeted in harmful and dangerous ways. And we know that past research efforts haven’t always protected our communities—in fact, they’ve often caused real harm.

That’s why we take privacy and safety extremely seriously.  Our security protocols have been developed specifically for this project by Two Spirit and LGBTQIA+ researchers and data security specialists with additional measures to counter the increasing challenges to research integrity in the U.S.

As a wholly independent, community-led project, we are not subject to any data sharing agreements with government, universities, or outside institutions. Your data will be securely stored, never sold, and only accessed by a handful of trusted researchers. You’ll never be asked to share more than you’re comfortable with, and nothing you share will be used without your clear, explicit consent. For more detailed information on our data collection and security practices, check out our data protection practices.

  • Your safety is our top concern, but only you can decide what is safe for you. We'll do our best to give you the information you need to decide for yourself how you want to engage with the project and whether you’re comfortable sharing your information.  We’ve worked hard to make this project affirming, but also we know it can feel vulnerable to share personal stories. If you need support, you may reach out to the Anti-Violence Project at 1-212-714-1141, The Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386, or Trans Lifeline at 1-877-565-8860. For more detailed information on our data collection and security practices, check out our data protection practices.

  • You can take the survey, submit art to the Community Art Project, and sign up for our mailing list to learn about activities happening in your community. You choose what works for you—there’s no one “right” way to be part of this. Learn more about research activities and other ways to get involved.

  • Too often, research gets done on communities—not with communities. And sometimes the people who shared their stories never even hear back. Pride in Numbers is different.

Our first commitment is to our community. We’ll share what we learn directly with Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ people across Oregon—through public reports, events, art, storytelling, and more. We’ll make sure our learnings are  accessible, easy to understand, and designed to support advocacy, organizing, and change.

You trusted us with your story. We promise to share what we learn—and to make sure it reaches the people and places where it matters most.

  • We’re committed to being accountable and transparent. If you have questions, concerns, or feedback, contact the Pride in Numbers team directly at info@prideinnumbersoregon.org.

  • The goal is long-term, transformative change. It’s not enough for Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ people to simply get by or stop being targeted—we deserve to thrive in our home state.

This project helps ensure that Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ voices are at the center of decisions about funding, services, and policies in Oregon—especially for those who’ve been pushed to the margins. The information and stories we gather will be shared back with the community, so our advocates, community organizations, and organizers – each of us – can build the programs, services, mutual aid networks, and policies we deserve and dream of. It’s about shifting power and building communities where our needs, lives, and leadership are no longer overlooked.

  • Yes! The survey is confidential and does not ask for your name or contact information. All questions outside the three mandatory screening questions are optional - you always decide how much you share with us.

If you’re participating in interviews, community gatherings, or submitting art through the Community Art Project, you decide how confidential you want your information to be. You always decide how much you share, and nothing is tied to your name unless you explicitly request to be identified. .
